I Was Sixteen in Oahu when the Japanese Bombed Pearl...
Life on the island of Oahu, Hawaii was like any other day on December 7th, 1941. The day it was sunny, with clear skies, and the temperature was at a perfect 75à °. Having lived on Oahu Island my entire life, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I lived in a small, yet cozy shack, with a window that faced Pearl Harbor. I enjoyed every bit of life there, just like every other civilian would have. I was the only child, and my father had passed away when I was just an infant. My mother had been diagnosed with leukemia and wasnââ¬â¢t able to work; nor even get out of bed. I already had a job, but I had to pick up a part-time job on Sundayââ¬â¢s to accommodate for my motherââ¬â¢s loss of income. This is because he said that activity on Pearl Harbor was very calm, and quiet. The idea of joining the Navy sat in the back of my head, but instead I would work almost every day I could. At first, I thought it was an earthquake, but the vibration was different and way too short. The noise was followed by increasingly loud noises. It did not seem to stop. I knew the shaking and the noise wasnââ¬â¢t a naturally sounding noise since I could smell smoke. I saw thick, black smoke rise above Pearl Harbor, and I could see orange flames from a distance. I thought was dreaming. Alarms went off on Pearl Harbor that was so loud you could hear it all over the island. I knew I wasnââ¬â¢t dreaming. At that point, I could spot a swarm of aircrafts flying toward the island. They had big, red spots on the tails of the planes. I thought about it and knew it must be the Japanese. I had to come to a realization that my beloved island w as being attacked by the Japanese. I didnââ¬â¢t dare go near Pearl Harbor. I didnââ¬â¢t finish my job that day and I rode my bicycle as fast as I possibly could to my mother. I was scared for myself, but more importantly, I was scared for my mother. Midway is nothing specialââ¬âjust a small string of islands six miles across built up to form coralââ¬âhowever its location and resources are important. If the United States of America had not been in possession of Midway, the Empire of Japan could have easily attacked Pearl Harbor, or possibly even the west coast
